416: Magic In The Big Apple

416 banner.jpg

In this podcast, we enjoy a chat about some of New York City's (NYC) rich heritage of magic with David "Silly Billy" Kaye, Herb Scher, and Richard Cohn. Richard Cohn is a scholar on Coney Island and on magic in NYC in general. He tells us about the history of some of the old local magic shops (like Tannen's, Martinka's, Holden's and others) plus stories about Al Flosso in Coney Island, Houdini, magic on Broadway, and "magic" things to do and see in the City today. If you plan to visit "The Big Apple" and looking to find a little magic, then I recommend you check out Herb's website for magical things to do, see and enjoy. Click Here to visit Herb's "Magic in New York Blog" for more information.

Herb Scher and David Kaye are involved with producing this year's 109th annual "Salute to Magic" which is open to the public and happens this Saturday night, April 14, 2018 at 7:30 at Fashion Institute of Technology’s Haft Theatre ( 227 West 27th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenue) This is sponsored by the S.A.M. Parent Assembly #1 which is one of the nation's oldest and longest running annual magic shows.

394: David Charvet - History Comes Alive

banner 394-Final 1.jpg

David Charvet is a noted historian of our art and well-known for his uncanny portrayal of the late Harry Blackstone, Jr. David is not only a performer and historian, but an author of several books including biographies of Alexander, Willard the Wizard, Emil Jarrow and others. He has trouped with Stan Kramien and worked with many of the greats in magic showbiz. You can hear David's scholarly talk about Willard the Wizard that he gave to a select group at the recent T.A.O.M. convention by Clicking Here. His talk begins at about 00:27:00 into the podcast.

"Divided We Stand: The Story of Sawing a Woman in Half" at MAGIC Live! David Charvet recreates Harry Blackstone Jr.'s Buzz Saw Illusion. August, 2011 at the Orleans Hotel, Las Vegas. Assisted by Melanie Kramer, Bill Smith, Allen Bracken and Ron Anderson. Hosted by Mike Caveney.

Time Stamps for this podcast

00:05:45 - David Charvet talks about Harry Blackstone, Jr., Willard the Wizard, Ade Duval, Stan Kramien, Peter Reveen, Doug Henning, Mark Wilson, Emil Jarrrow, and more legendary greats from the past.

01:15:08 - Product Review "Fall" by Banachek and Philip Ryan. A psychokinetic Sharpie that falls of its own accord. Recommended.

01:21:30 - Product Review "Jumping Gem Pen - Eye Exam" by Jeff Prace. A cute use of the Paddle Move using a couple Bic Pens with writing on them.

01:24:38 - Product Review "Nitrate" by Cameron Francis. A variation on Max Maven's "B-Wave" that is a winner. A multi phase close-up, walkaround trick that I highly recommend.

01:27:14 - Product Review "Gift Card" byt Constantinos Pantelias - A "Gift Card" clipped to a playing card but when the paper clip is removed, the playing card has changed.

#204: 2014 Year of Magic in Review

It's that time of the year when we try to "put the band back together" and chat with members of the hosts from the MagicNewswire.com podcast, "This Week in Magic". Trying to get a time to arrange everyone's schedule is like "herding cats". So, due to work and health conflicts, this year we have David "Silly Billy" Kaye and Cameron Ramsay join Scott Wells to discuss what went on in the magic world this past year.

To supplement our chat about Magic on TV, here is a little up-to-the-minute information that I read on IndieWire.com after our chat:

"Magic is in the air, or at least on the airwaves. "Masters of Illusion" did well enough for CW last year to make an order for 13 more episodes materialize – and that's after being canceled by MyNetworkTV in 2009. It joins the network's other magic show, the British ITV production "Penn & Teller: Fool Us," as well as magic programs gaining traction on basic cable. TruTV's "The Carbonaro Effect" will be back for a second season, while "Wizard Wars" returns to Syfy in January for six additional episodes. Even shows that don't have magic as a focus are shuffling it into the deck: "American Masters" is kicking off a new season January 23 with an episode about master magician Ricky Jay, and Nat Geo's "Brain Games," regularly tosses a sleight-of-hand artist into the mix."

Of course this is from a personal perspective of the guest on this podcast and does not include a lot of things you perhaps found to be more relevant. But we hope you enjoy our chat.

Instead of bouncing all over the globe, we try to stay on topic with an agenda that includes: magic on television; live touring magic shows; magic conventions; notable passings, and; predictions for 2015.
