262: Just One Thing with Bob Fitch

Fitch banner.jpg

Bob Fitch is well known among those who know him well. Of course that is meant to be tongue-in-cheek as of course Bob is a man of many hats...and he wears them all extremely well: actor, director, magician, singer and dancer. A show business legend himself, Bob has appeared in theatrical presentations including: "Funny Things Happened On The Way To The Forum", Will Roger's Follies, Annie, Mack & Mabel, Mame, and many more. He has worked or directed many of the famous celebrities including Liza Minnelli, Steve Martin, Carol Channing, Katherine Hepburn, Jerry Lewis, Mickey Rooney, Carol Burnette, Whoopi Goldberg, just to name a very few.

But among magicians, he is known for his series of three Topit videos and his work with the Fitch Kohler Hold-Out. But perhaps he is best known as someone who helps professionals take their game up another notch. As a director and coach in private workshops, Bob finds and focuses on one thing that will help make their performances achieve greatness. It could be something as simple as eliminating the walk between a volunteer and the performer's table by merely carrying the prop on your person, thus avoiding the lapse in time it takes to make the walk. Or it could be the opposite in which the performer adds that time by walking back and forth. Often times, whatever that "one thing" is turns out to be something that leads the performer to think about other aspects of his/her performance that could use the same kind of attention.

Bob Fitch has won many awards over the years including: Best Director - Nominated - New England Theatre Awards; Best Director & Best Actor - Nominated - Carbonelle Awards (Florida); Burns-Mantle Award (Broadway) for Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Annie). And the S.A.M. Parent Assembly awarded Bob with the "Magician of the Year", and in 2009, the Academy of Magical Arts presented him with the "Lifetime Achievement Award".

Bob Fitch was one of the featured lecturers and performers at this year's T.A.O.M. convention (let me say here again that I found it to be one of the top ten best conventions I have ever attended). In this podcast, Bob talks about several of the things he taught during his lecture plus some of the same stories that he related there, too. If you saw/heard/experienced that lecture, then you will enjoy hearing it again. It's like reading a book a second time and finding a passage you overlooked the first time. If you missed the lecture, then I know you will enjoy and learn at least "one thing" from our chat.

214: Martin Cox - How Bad Could It Be?

Have you seen the online video of "magic gone bad"? If you have, then you may not have recognized the blurred out image of the magician who, umm, er, uh, had "problems" when he performed the "Smash and Stab" illusion that resulted in what could have been much more tragic. Well, wonder no longer who that person was as his name and face is now known. Enough time has passed that Martin Cox can freely talk about this incident.

Martin Cox performed and lectured in Houston in February 2015 during his recent lecture tour of the U.S. Martin was a stand-out hit according to the 400+ guests at the banquet and his lecture was enjoyed by the 30+ magicians who attended. His "King of Warp" variation on "Card Warp" is particularly good. While in Houston, he was my house guest for a few days and during that visit, we had plenty of time for me to show him some of the sights and tastes of the city's tourists spots and restaurants.

Oh, and by the way...in case you're wondering, Martin did not perform the Smash and Stab at the banquet here in Houston.

During this podcast, Martin talks about magic on television, particularly magic on British telly, and the impact it has on us as magicians. He also talks about how to respond to those who ask, "oh, I really don't care much for magic", or "I wish my children were here." He also talks about approaching tables and how to handle adults talking in the back of the room during your birthday party performances. He tells us some advice on developing your character and on timing and the differences between America and the U.K. There is a difference between children's shows and family shows.

00:31:08 - But perhaps most interesting thing we discuss is the YouTube video of his performance of a trick that horribly wrong and injured a volunteer.

#200 - How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Last year we brought you "The Night Before Christmas" read by a handful of popular magicians. It was so well received that I asked a few more guys (and gals) to read "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas". See if you can pick out the voices of: Boris Wild, Bob Cassidy, Docc Hilford, Tim Ellis, Tim Trono, George Tait, Rocco Silano, Eric DeCamps, Mandy Farrell, Ice McDonald, Steven Bargatze, Marc Salem, Rick Merrill, Richard Osterlind and, as the Grinch, Eugene Burger.

As I attended several magic conventions over this past year, I took aside a few guys and gals to chat on the podcast. But many of the people graciously agreed to record something special just for this very special podcast. I hope you enjoy hearing their reading of this Doctor Seuss classic. This was one of the most difficult podcasts to edit and took the longest time to gather all the voices to do this one which ended up being one of the shortest ones, too.

This special podcast is my Christmas gift to you for listening for these past few years to the previous 199 podcasts. I wish all the best to you and yours for this holiday season.
