294: Jamie Salinas - Half Halloween

Well, we appear to have been off by about a month because we thought May 31st was the halfway point between last Halloween and the next one. But nevertheless, now is the time to work on and start promoting your Halloween services. And what services might those be? Well, it's a perfect time to talk with the things that go "bump in the night". You may not be a mystery entertainer, a bizarrist, or a psychic, but I'll bet that even if you don't utilize any of our suggestions, at least you will be better equipped to know what is "out there".

Jamie Salinas is an award winning Houston, Texas, area magician who has been a business partner of mine for many years. As "Top Talent Productions" and following the closure of The Magic Island, we used to produce magic shows in a five star hotel in downtown Houston featuring magicians from across the country. But during the month of October for the past eight years, we have produced seances in an old downtown bar (established in 1847) that is said to be haunted. During our chat, we often refer to a mini lecture we gave a couple years ago and posted in a September 2014 podcast which you can find here. 244: Two Daves - Dave Cox & David Kaplan

Two Daves that need shaves. Dave Cox and David Kaplan, both successful creative comedy magicians in their own right. Both were part of the talent line-up at this year's incredibly great I.B.M. convention in Jacksonville, Florida. Both performed and gave wonderful lectures (which I would recommend to other convention organizers). David Kaplan basically followed me from Italy to Florida, from FISM to the I.B.M. convention where he also performed and lectured. And I recently saw Dave Cox perform at the Magic Castle along with Bruce Gold in the Peller Theater as the "Evil Twins" (a wonderful act, BTW).

I caught up with Dave Cox after his lecture to sit down for a chat but before we turned on the recorder, David Kaplan wandered up to see if we wanted to go to lunch. I suggested we talk first, then eat. David acquiesced and joined the conversation which will last longer than the digested food. So, it is to your benefit that we get to hear some advice, stories and chuckles from a couple of the "under-sung" comedians in our industry today.

213: Chicago Magic Bars & Lounges

Chicago has a rich history of magic bars within the city limits as well as in the outlying areas. The "hay day" of magic bars in Chicago ended around 1998 with the closing of the last magic bar. But Joey Cranford and John Sturk are pumping new life into an old concept with the new nightclub/theater called "Chicago Magic Lounge". This will be a recreation of the early 20th century, prohibition era lounge one night each week on the upper part of Chicago.

Bill Weimer is a local magician who was an integral part of the Chicago magic bar scene from the 1970's through the 1990's. He worked seven of the nine or so Chicago-land magic bars. He has a lot of stories about these clubs in their glory days and in fact, wrote a book about his experiences called "Now You See Them, Now You Don't".
