346: Stan Allen Is Not Mr. Nobody

Even though he is retired from editing the magazine, Stan Allen is far from being relegated to a "nobody" status. He really is somebody to reckon with in the magic community. And he has lots of plans for the future.

Editor of the former MAGIC Magazine (or is it, Former Editor of MAGIC Magazine), Stan Allen, has been a guest on The Magic Word many times, but he is undoubtedly the man who has his "finger on the pulse" of the magic community. He knows everyone in the magic community and was the logical first stop in my "Las Vegas Chronicles". With MAGIC Magazine now a part of our history, his focus is now on planning future MAGIC Live! conventions which he talks about in this podcast.

Stan was the first guest I visited on my trip to Las Vegas as we talked not only about the evolution and demise of MAGIC Magazine, but also about digital magic magazines and where that might go, and he wraps up talking about the future of his MAGIC Live! conventions (now that there is no "bringing MAGIC Magazine to life" to model the convention after) and breaking the mold of the traditional event.

341: Houdini-Opoly with Dick Brookz and Dorothy Dietrich

Dorothy Dietrich and Dick Brookz own and operate the Houdini Museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania. They have both led extraordinary lives and worthy of talking more about their Houdini museum, the Houdini seance, and the former Magic Townhouse in New York City. They talk about all these things but the purpose of this particular podcast is to help the magic world learn more about their newest project, "Houdini-Opoly"

They have been working on this board game for over two years and with the Kickstarter campaign now being fully funded just before this podcast was released. So not it's on to meet their "stretch" goals to pay for the "enhancements". Thanks to your support, it appears that it will be in production soon this year. The Magic Word Podcast is selective in providing a platform for promoting individuals or pet projects. But this is one I support and think is of particular interest to our community. But even if you choose not to support the cause and buy a game, the rest of our chat is interesting as we talk about the old Magic Townhouse in New York City and why it closed and the museum moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania. 324: Garrett Thomas On Astonishment Plus MAGIC Legacy Update

Garrett Thomas is a wonderful performer, teacher and lecturer. He recently traveled across the U.S. and he stopped in Houston, Texas where he took time to sit behind the microphone to give us a mini-lecture. Well, it may not be so "mini" as he spoke for over two hours with the first part being posted in this podcast.

But before Garrett begins, we have to address the topical magic story of Stan Allen who prematurely "pulled the plug" on MAGIC Legacy plus he would publish one more issue of MAGIC Magazine and add another MAGIC Live! convention in 2017. After some of the dust settled in the magic social media, Stan took time to talk about the thoughts that went through his mind into making this hard decision.

In an effort to keep the podcast to about one hour in length, our conversation has been broken into two separate podcasts. In this Part One, Garrett talks about the importance of creating "astonishment" in the lives of our spectators. He will follow through with this discussion in the next podcast plus he will talk about his work as a consultant for David Blaine plus working at the fabled Forks Hotel in Buffalo, New York, original home of the F.F.F.F. close-up convention.
