400: David Berglas - International Man of Mystery, Part One

400 banner new.jpg

David Berglas has an affect on me.

Okay, that is corny. But it is true that he has influenced and inspired more magicians and mentalists in the world than can be counted. Not only has he changed how we look at magic, David Berglas has significantly changed magic on television.

The BBC called him the “Godfather of TV Magic”.  Born in 1926, Berglas escaped to Britain from Nazi Germany at age 11. He first became interested in Magic in his 20’s and studied psychotherapy at university before becoming a professional magician in 1952. His groundbreaking TV show in 1986, “The Mind of David Berglas” paved the way for all others to follow up to this very day. He is the author of several books including, "The Berglas Effects" and "The Mind & Magic of David Berglas", among others. And he is an multiple award winner of several prestigious organizations and is the Past President of The Magic Circle.

I was part of a momentous meeting organized by Spyros Melaris in 2002 when he arranged a dinner meeting with David Berglas and his wife, Ruth, with Banachek and his wife, Heidi, and me and my wife, Kathy. It was a wonderful, memorable dinner with Banachek sharing his spoon bending to David and magic talk late into the evening. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, no photos of that evening exist except those in our minds.

It was at that first meeting that we all became good friends and I am glad that we could get together again for this podcast where David talks about his beginnings in magic, work both in front of and behind the cameras on television and film, plus lots of stories about celebrated names of magicians, most of whom are long since passed.

Magicians' Valhalla

Although the list below is not exhaustive nor in any particular order, it does reflect the names of many well-known (and some lesser known) magicians, spouses and assistants who passed on in 2017. Some may not be as well-known to you, but they were my personal friends (hey, it is my blog!). If you are unfamiliar with any of these names, then it would behoove you to do a little online search of what these people have contributed to our craft. If you have someone you think was overlooked, then please post the name in the comments below on this blog.

Those whose names are highlighted were featured or interviewed here on The Magic Word Podcast. You can click on their name to revisit and listen to their voices again. David Oliver put together a video of some names and dates of passing of these (and others) in a YouTube video. Click Here to see that video.

332: Jason Latimer - Inspiring Mystery

Jason Latimer is more than a magician. He has a passion for science and he inspires mystery and wonder in the eyes and minds of young people and adults. You may know him as a multiple award winner of various magic contests including the Grand Prix at F.I.S.M. in 2003 plus close-up and invention at F.I.S.M. He has frequently appeared on the BBC in the U.K. plus he was one of the "wizards" on the SyFy channel's "Wizard Wars" featuring Pann & Teller and others.. He has "semi-retired" from performing magic, particularly for magicians at magic conventions, and focuses now on science and how it looks like magic. He is working with the Fleet Science Center in San Diego, California as well as a joint project with ComiCon.

Jason LATIMER World Champion of Magic Video: World Champion of Magic Latimer and Britain's Got Talent Winner George Sampson pull off the most amazing teleportation in the history of magic! See more at www.facebook.com/jasonlatimerofficial http://www.twitter.com/jasonlatimer http://www.jasonlatimer.com
Challenge what you know, ask questions, and be curious. Its wonder that changes the world. The next technology, the new cure, the next revolutionary advancement all lie behind the question we haven't asked yet.

Time Stamps for this podcast:

00:03;20 - Jason Latimer (http://jasonlatimer.com/) talks about winning magic awards, how to prepare (should you wish to enter contests), and his passion for learning science that led to exploring magic.

01:08:38 - "Narcissus" by Chris Philpott takes his "100 Monkeys" into the close-up world. It is a pretty cool idea that allows your volunteer to snap a picture to keep as a memory of the experience.

01:13:51 - "Deal Sealer" by Cody Fisher is the trick he says gets him the "$100 handshake" as he leaves the corporate party. It is a great presentation for an old chestnut.

162: Part 2 - My Week at The Castle 2014

A trip to the Castle must include a trip to a magic shop. And the only one to visit is The Magic Apple in nearby Studio City. Not only is it a great shop, complete with everything the professional and amateur and hobbyist will need, it is cool to hang out there because you never know who will show up. Well known "celebrity" magicians come and go like moths to a light. You never know who will be there. It's all about...timing.

DATELINE San Diego, CA: June 17, 2014 from Jason Latimer - ITS OFFICIAL!!! The Rueben H. Fleet Science Center in San Diego, CA and I have teamed up to produce the new live show and projection experience “Perception: See Beyond the Illusion” in the newly retrofitted DOME PROJECTION THEATER!!! This experience is designed to inspire wonder in all ages all while in a science center! "Perception" combines illusions in applied sciences with a massive eight-story wraparound projection environment!

Effects such as shaping water, to bending light, to liquids that defy gravity, and many others will all be done live while the projection environment immerses the audience under star filled skies, underwater scenes, and even takes audiences into my computer of 3D modeling of the effects to see a glimpse of the engineering behind doing the impossible all blended together for one truly magical surreal experience. "Perception will inspire minds to think and see beyond their answers through jaw dropping applications of science all to promote wonder and the importance of curiosity in science, because the right question changes everything." -Jason Latimer

As more info comes out, I need your help and support to spread the word! This show marks the first time magic has really been used an academic tool and I think it really will inspire our youth to view science differently. Its a dream come true to create a show that inspires curiosity and questions in a science center! This will be an entirely new way to learn. For more info visit: http://www.rhfleet.org/press-room/reuben-h-fleet-science-center-hosts-jason-latimer-world-champion-magic

Jason Latimer: The World Champion of Magic says, "Its the first of its kind and I can't wait to get started! Shows run every Friday - Sunday (two shows a day) July 5th- Aug 31st!"

00:01:13 - Brent Geris, proprietor of the Magic Apple, talks about brick and mortar shops and the importance of learning magic through practice and reading.

00:17:08 - Jason Latimer has been away from the public scene of magic (at magic conventions, for example) while he has been involved in many interesting and important projects and exhibits. He also talks about wrapping up the shooting for the first season of Wizard Wars on SyFy television network.

00:37:02 - Jonathan Levit talks about his experience of coming to Hollywood to follow and fulfill his dream of working in the movies. He has performed in and consulted for such movies as "Now You See Me" and "Burt Wonderstone".
