413: Dr. Tim Moore - Collector and Protector of Our Past

413 banner.jpg

Dr. Tim Moore talks about one of the more well-known magic collectors, Ken Klosterman, the preservation of the Thurston mausoleum in Columbus, his involvement with keeping the MagiFest going during the "hand-off" from the Jep Hostetler days and to it now being handled by Joshua Jay and Andi Gladwin. He also talks about how he got into collecting magic and his specialty including mainly the Hermann family. He then also talks about how he came to own the Karl Germain Lock, advice to people who want to "get into collecting magic" and the disposition of his collection after his passing. We talk briefly about the museum in Blois, France for Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin. You can see and lean more about it by Clicking Here.

Towards the end of our conversation, Tim mentioned the importance of trust when buying, selling and trading collector pieces. Although he preferred not to go into any detail over the million dollar lawsuit, you can read all about it by Clicking Here.

Mystery of the Houdini Milk Can - Do you know where the other Can is located? Listen to this podcast where towards the end, Tim asks for help in locating the Can.

412: Doug Isenberg on Internet Law

412 banner.jpg

GigaLaw creator, Doug Isenberg, Attorney At Law, was a presenter at the recent MagiFest in Columbus, Ohio who talked about the importance of having respect for intellectual property and adhering to copyright laws. Piracy of magic ideas and products has been an ongoing topic on The Magic Word Podcast over the past five years and it's time we talk with an expert in the field who tells what we can do to stop it or at least how we can try. Moreover, he talks about patents and the importance of registering and copyrighting your intellectual property which could help if you ever had to go to court over it as Teller did over his closely guarded secret "Shadows" routine.

Time stamps for this podcast:

00:06:54 - Doug Isenberg talks about internet law, domains, branding, intellectual property, registering your trademark, copyrighting, etc.

00:58:14 - Produt Review: "Food For Thought: The Book Test" by Gary Sumpter and available from Ace Magic Studio. This is a different book test on many accounts, most notably it is a colorful recipe book. I predict you will like it and use it. Highly recommended.

411: Luke Dancy In Front And Behind The Camera

411 banner.jpg

Luke Dancy may not be a familiar name...for now. But that is about to change. Luke worked behind the scenes with Criss Angel for seven years as a consultant and helping direct through the camera for some of Criss' TV shows. Luke now works for Murphy's Magic Supplies and hosts a regular vlog that is posted on Murphy's YouTube channel and their Facebook page.

Luke hosted my "At The Table" lecture taping (which will be due out later this Fall) as well as those of many others. He has had a lifetime of experience as a professional magician and shares some of his stories with us on this week's podcast.

As a resident of Las Vegas, Luke Dancy knows all too well that it's a city of smoke and mirrors. It's a magical place that plays with people's perceptions on a daily basis. In this opener with a brilliant kicker, Luke shows just how much the city has rubbed off on him.

Timestamps for this week's podcast:

00:04:45 - Luke Dancy talks about his work with Murphy's Magic Supplies and his time with Criss Angel.

00:59:35 - Product Review: "Aiden" by Ryuhei Nakamuraor from SansMinds - a Sharpie Pen comes to life and inscribes a symbol/design on an index card. Pretty finicky and requires a lot of preparation and correct lightiing. Recommended for those who like this type of thing.

01:05:39 - Product Review: "Holely Change" from SansMinds - a visual card routine where the back of a signed card changes colors. Recommended for walk-around magic if you watch your handling.

01:10:46 - Product Review: "The Casino Con" by Steve Gore and Gregory Wilson from Steven G Presents - a three phase card routine using playing cards from Las Vegas casinos that have closed. Clever and recommended.
