359: Andrew Goldenhersh - Not A Hare Out Of Place

This podcast with Andrew Goldenhersh was recorded in February 2017 just after he received word about his nomination for "Close-Up Magician of the Year" for the Academy of Magical Arts. Of course, the awards banquet has now come and gone and he did not take home the award. This year it went to Richard Turner.

Andrew Goldenhersh, AMA Parlor Magician of the Year, visited Houston and stopped by to record a podcast for The Magic Word. This video was streamed LIVE via Facebook and includes about 15 minutes of additional footage at the end that was not part of the audio podcast.

Andrew Goldenhersh talks about his many years of being a "bridesmaid and never a bride" meaning that he was nominated by the Academy of Magical Arts but it took ten years before he won his first AMA award. He also talks about his influences, scripting, side show stunts, creativity, developing his act and character, and how he came about meeting and working with actor Jason Alexander ""George Castanza" from "Seinfeld").

He goes on to talk about how he learned to perform in Japanese and why he needed to learn another language, but more importantly, how he came to tighten up his script.He also chats about the importance of silence, pauses and taking beats in your act that heightens the performance. His unconventional idea on how to handle hecklers is a real gem, too.

281: Live From The Loft with Tony Clark & Bobby Hall

While recently visiting South Lake Tahoe for a little R&R, I was fortunate to see Tony Clark in action at the new "Loft at Heavenly Village" conveniently located less than 100 yards from my hotel. This is a beautiful new venue nestled in a vacation capital and promises to be popular among tourists. The two evenings I visited were both packed to near capacity of the 107 seat theater. Plus the restaurant/bar was a hub of activity that went on until late at night for skiers and revelers. The Loft is open seven nights a week from 4:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m.

Tony Clark is the impresario who produces "Magic Fusion" at The Loft. The facility itself is the $1-million investment that Paul Reder, president of PR Entertainment, spent the last two years turning into a reality. It finally went "live" in mid-December 2015 and features live magic entertainment (both stage and close-up) plus fine Italian dining and an upscale lounge area and bar, complete with two fireplaces and overstuffed couches. Nov. 19, 2015 UPDATE: Larry Wilson teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel co-host Guillermo and “YouTube sensation" Meghan Rienks to reveal the new 2017 Ford Escape. The Internet spot, filmed on Hollywood Boulevard across the street from the studio where ABCs latenight show Kimmel Live is shot, featured a vanish of the sidekick inside a “piñata of doom” and his distant reappearance. Wilson performed the trick at his Spellbinder convention on October 24 and the next day received a call from Kimmel’s people. Quick arrangements were made, the routine was rehearsed for two days, and then it was shot live on November 16.
