561: Chris Pilsworth - A Canadian Conjurer with a Cactus

561 banner.jpg

Chris Pilsworth is not a name that is on the tip of the tongue for most magicians. He quietly performs professionally for corporations across Canada with the occasional outdoor busking, too. But he is noted for his creative ideas and consulting with magicians from Las Vegas to London and even for television in China. His approach to magic is passion and commitment with new ideas popping up all the time. If you don’t already know Chris, then you will make a new friend after hearing this week’s episode.

547: Hannibal - Making a Connection

547 banner 2.jpg

Hannibal is another magician who got into magic later in life. He was 26 when he decided to make it a career. In this episode, he talks about being creative, finding his character, developing his unique act after he was forced to improvise. He also talks about scripting versus “Jazz magic”, performing in theatres vs. intimate venues, the benefits of street performing, and his Renaissance character as Hannibal the Liar. He also discusses what “Magic” is to him. We even have a little workshop on creativity and “not stopping too soon” when thinking about your act or a routine. The main point of this episode is inspiring you create a memorable moment in your act that your audience will take home and keep forever.

He also has a blog entitled, “The Truth Is…” which you can find by Clicking Here.

A fun little effect performed at the Magic Castle. Enjoy! Thank you for watching,

This week, Hannibal talks about how (out of necessity) he developed a new close-up act, how he developed his character, the progress of developing his act, and he even holds a little workshop on how to think beyond what you believe is “finished.” It’s almost like a mini-lecture, all tied up neatly in this week’s episode.

378 - Tom Frank - Street Wise

378 banner.jpg

Tom Frank crossed the U.S. on a major lecture tour in early 2017. While he was in Houston, Texas, I had a chance to chat with him about some of the things in his lecture plus some of the things that weren't. Tom performed on Universal Studio's "City Walk" for a number of years until he was bumped by Harry Potter.

Tom Frank lectured for the Houston Association of Magicians and took some time to sit behind the new microphones to chat with Scott Wells for The Magic Word Podcast. Be sure to listen to our chat at https://www.themagicwordpocsast.com/scottwellsmagic/378-tom-frank

Time Stamps for this podcast:

00:08:18 - Tom talks about the importance of "Back of the Room Sales", pitching, and how magicians are leaving money on the table; performing on the street; advice he received from Cellini; lessons he's learned while on the street and on the road; operating a brick and mortar magic shop; and more.

01:06:24 - Product Review: "Cube 3" by Steven Brundage is not a gimmicked Rubik's Cube, but it is a super smooth working model complete with an online instruction video and PDF. This is NOT a self-working trick but will require work to perform. Recommended.

01:11:44 - Product Review: "The Yarn" by Manuel LLaser (Vernet Magic) is a signed bill/card to ball of yarn. Recommended.

What a great, action-packed, adrenaline-laced, fast-paced movie. I recommend watching part one (Dead Reckoning) to catch up from where we left off two years ago. Best to see this on the big screen. Recommended!
