574: Edward Hilsum - Triple Crown Winner

As a follow-up to last week’s podcast about magic contests, I took the advice of Noel Britten (President of The Magic Circle) and contacted Edward Hilsum. He is the winner of three separate contests offered by TMC: Stage Magician of the Year, Close-Up Magician of the Year, and Children’s Entertainer of the Year. This unprecedented achievement is even more impressive when you consider that Edward is only 28 years old.

573: Secrets of F.I.S.M. Contests Revealed

In response to another listener’s request, this week we try to demystify the judging process for the World Championships of Magic, F.I.S.M. To do so, we make a visit with three leading proponents who may hold the keys. First up is Noel Britten, President of The Magic Circle in London, England. He gives great advice on what one should consider before even entering a competition. And from Las Vegas, Nevada, Past National President of the S.A.M. and Contest Chairman, Vinny Grosso, tells us about the preliminaries that one must hurdle to compete in the world championships. Then from Paris, France, Boris Wild, a F.I.S.M. winner himself and current head of the F..I.S.M. jury, sheds some light on the subject.

F.I.S.M. has gone through changes to its judging rules and requirements for competing. In this week’s episode we try to learn what has changed and what contestants should expect the jury (judges) to look for in the competitions. Moreover, the suggestions made by Noel Britten should be required listening for anyone considering entering any magic competition regardless of how far you want to take it.

341: Houdini-Opoly with Dick Brookz and Dorothy Dietrich

Dorothy Dietrich and Dick Brookz own and operate the Houdini Museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania. They have both led extraordinary lives and worthy of talking more about their Houdini museum, the Houdini seance, and the former Magic Townhouse in New York City. They talk about all these things but the purpose of this particular podcast is to help the magic world learn more about their newest project, "Houdini-Opoly"

They have been working on this board game for over two years and with the Kickstarter campaign now being fully funded just before this podcast was released. So not it's on to meet their "stretch" goals to pay for the "enhancements". Thanks to your support, it appears that it will be in production soon this year. The Magic Word Podcast is selective in providing a platform for promoting individuals or pet projects. But this is one I support and think is of particular interest to our community. But even if you choose not to support the cause and buy a game, the rest of our chat is interesting as we talk about the old Magic Townhouse in New York City and why it closed and the museum moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania.
