789: Harry Maurer - Life on the Deep Blue Sea

From Houston, Texas, to Tokyo, Japan, Harry Maurer has done it all. It is hard to say if he is best known as a cruise ship magician as he does (or has done) so many things and done them all to perfection. When he is not at sea, he is busy booking himself and his lovely wife, Carol Anne, in clubs, casinos, banquet rooms and theaters across the U.S. It is rare to find him at home where we caught him for this special episode.

Although this week’s episode is entitled, “Life on the Deep Blue Sea,” where Harry talks at length about his cruising experiences over the years, he also talks about performing in Las Vegas with Joey Bishop (one of the original members of the Rat Pack), entertaining at the Playboy Club, experiences on and off stage with notable celebrities and celebrated magicians. He also gives us a sneak preview of his talk he often presents to group about the War Magician. 497: Pat Hazell - Part One: Notes From Home

Pat Hazell may not be a name you are familiar with, but for those do (like Johnny Carson and Jerry Seinfeld), then you know how funny he is and how serious he takes comedy. He was an emcee at the 2018 MAGIC Live! event where he showed the “fake trailer” that fooled Jerry. You can view that very funny trailer by Clicking Here. He moved from magic into comedy but has never quit thinking about magic. “Wonderbread Years” is just one of his successful one-man shows that he has developed along the way. In this “Notes From Home” podcast, he talks about his roots so you can see perhaps how it affected his later life as a successful comedian.

In this podcast, Pat Hazell talks about his recent return to magic conventions with his appearance at the 2018 MAGIC Live! event, He also talks about his magical beginnings in Omaha performing restaurant magic, his performances on ”The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson”, and a publicity stunt to promote his ”upside down straight jacket escape” in the warehouse district of Omaha (see the picture here on the blog). He also tells some funny stories about Hooters Restaurant, his Omaha apartment that had high enough ceilings where he could practice juggling, and his “joke of the day” on his answering machine. Pat also talks about why he got into comedy writing and performing that led to his move to Los Angeles where his career took off. There are a ton of other stories that you’re sure to enjoy.

490: Shep Hyken - Be Amazing or Go Home

Shep Hyken and I spent a lot of time together during the recent MagiCuba convention and he recently passed through Houston. We spent a delightful evening of dining and conversation and some of it was recorded here for this podcast. Shep has so much to say and you can find much of his content online through newsletters, podcast, tweets, online videos, and more. He is everywhere and al over social media. In this podcast, Shep talks about working at the Playboy Club when he was a teenager, then later moving from magic and trade shows to professional, keynote speaking, content marketing for magicians, and so much more.
