Time stamps for this episode :

00:00:17 - Join us for a road trip from Houston to Fort Worth, Texas, as we talk about the upcoming magic convention. Traveling and talking with us is one of the dealers who will be at the convention, Harriet Jacobson.

00:05:38 - T.A.O.M. 2022 President Bronson Chadwick talks about his philosophy and vision for this convention.

00:12:45 - Gregg Lancaster and I recap the activities of the first day of the T.A.O.M. including the lectures and the evening show. Wow! Warning: honest report contained herein.

00:23:58 - we begin the first full day of the convention by clarifying some of what we overlooked or misspoke from the previous evening’s chat with Gregg Lancaster. We also chat with Carolyn Cummings (daughter of Kent Cummings) and Eugene Wilkes who have attended nearly 50 years of this convention. This was recorded at the Order of Willard breakfast.

00:33:11 - I hosted the stage contest where we featured brief chats with magicians between the contest acts. I was not allowed to encourage applause nor hype the acts in any way, so these little segments were perfect little “elevator talks” with guests who had entertaining things to share plus keep the audience entertained between competition acts.

00: 35:09 - First up was Rolando Santos, Past International President of the I.B.M. who talked about his role with The Linking Ring plus an overview of his lecture. Very interesting.

00:48:10 - Trixie Bond was a two time winner when she was a junior. She also talked about her presentation coming later tonight about some Texas magicians who have passed away.

00:55:28 - Jay Zugai chats briefly about his participation in this year’s convention with his lecture as well as close-up and stage show performances.

00:49:52 - Losander chats about his new theater in Las Vegas (Las Vegas Magic Theater) and the shows he does there.

01:03:22 - Lynetta Welch talks about her company, Fabric Manipulation, and how she sews new products and makes old products look new. She also gives us a sneak preview of what’s to come tomorrow in her lecture.

444: Don Wiberg - Part Two: Chicago Magic Roundtable History

444 banner.jpg

Don Wiberg is a Past International President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Hre is the historical information on the Chicago Round able as reported on the website of the Chicago Magic Lounge:

The Chicago Magic Round Table was originally established in 1929 as an informal gathering of professional and amateur magicians, meeting daily for lunch at De Lazon’s restaurant. Luminaries like Jay and Frances Marshall, Dr. Harlan Tarbell, Harry Blackstone Sr., and Werner Dornfield, held court in the spirit of camaraderie and a shared love of the art of magic. Word quickly spread, and the Round Table came to be a headquarters for magicians.

The gatherings continued into the mid-1950s, and endured a few changes of location, eventually settling on a daily lunch at the Drake Restaurant. Eventually though, meetings tapered off, sometime in the 1960s, and the first iteration of the Round Table slowly vanished.

The Chicago Magic Round Table had a brief resurgence in the late 2000s when Dan Mindo, Tracy Atteberry, and David Parr revived the informal gatherings beginning at the Green Door Tavern under the name "Chicago Magic Round Table". However, that too,  faded away as schedules and availability had their eternal clash, and schedules won...

In 2018, the Chicago Magic Round Table has been re-established with a new permanent home: the Chicago Magic Lounge. An association of practicing, amateur, and hobbyist magicians, our goal is to create a community for practitioners and lovers of magic. Be a part of the grand history of Chicago magic. Don Wiberg is a Past International President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. and a great historian of Chicago's rich magic history. In this first of two parts, the early part of this podcast includes a nostalgic walk through some of Chicago's magic shops that were tightly distributed within a few blocks of downtown Chicago. The latter half of this podcast is filled with stories of some of the early members of the Chicago Round Table.
