556: Joe M. Turner - Fechter's Finger Flicking Frolic Reflections

556 banner.jpg

We had a most delightful and educational visit with Past International President, Joe M. Turner in 2015 (Episode #208) where Joe gave some excellent advice about getting into the Speaking Business. This week we go in a different direction with Joe. Since magic conventions have been canceled or postponed, The Magic Word Podcast has not been able to bring you daily convention updates. So, this week we talk with one of the emcees from Obie’s 4F convention as we reminisce about some past F.F.F.F. conventions and what makes this event stand out in all the world. We also discuss the state of conventions and perhaps a glimpse of where we’re heading with our conflabs.

But before we get into the meat of this week’s podcast, one of our favorite guests, Norman Beck, has a comical take on our current situation. He provides a little relief when we need it most. Thanks, Norm, for taking our call to your “Comedy Hot Line.”

Thanks goes to Mike Maione who put together this montage of past performers at Obie’s 4F convention.

http://www.turnermagic.com | Atlanta corporate magician, mentalist and keynote speaker Joe M. Turner appeared on Fox 5 Atlanta's "Good Day Xtra" on June 7, 2010. His performance for hosts Karen Graham and Jeff Hill included a quick card location and an impossible torn-and-restored routine using a photo of Karen which she had autographed. His appearance was to promote his upcoming benefit show for Engage Atlanta. Corporate magician, mentalist and keynote speaker Joe M. Turner is your event's "Chief Impossibility Officer." 545: Stan Allen - From My Desk: Conventional Wisdom

545 banner.jpg

While in Las Vegas for the 2020 S.A.M. convention, I visited Stan Allen, organizer of MAGIC Live!, in his office. Stan works all year to produce the largest magic convention in the U.S. So, I think what he has to say about magic conventions is important and we can learn a thing or two from him. Producing a successful convention is definitely a team effort but what make a convention successful? Well, he has some advice from his perspective.

In this episode, Stan provides some insight about magic conventions from his perspective (at his desk) providing content on the history of magic conventions, where we are now and perhaps where we are headed. He also suggests to organizers that they should think about the Four “C’s”: City, Content, Cost and Community.

331: Mike Pisciotta - Magic Castle Mixologist and Mystifier

Mike Pisciotta defeated all odds and stiff competition to win the "Close-Up Magician of the Year" from the Academy of Magical Arts (The Magic Castle). He regularly performs in the Hat and Hare Pub in the "dungeon" of the Castle where he mixes drinks and magic in equal measure. But from time to time, he also performs new material in the Close-Up Gallery.

I recognize that Mike may not be as well-known to the international magic community as he rarely travels or performs outside of Los Angeles, except for his recent Texas lecture tour. But this is one of magic's "jewels" who you need to meet and know.

Esquire Channel's Best Bars in America Episode on LA Speakeasies Featuring The Magic Castle with a special erformance by Mike Pisciotta.
