519: Dal Sanders - Still Smiling

519 banner.jpg

Dal Sanders was with the McDonald’s organization for 40 years and is still smiling. And he has a lot to smile about. He is still entertaining children through his Kartoon Circus television show on SpydarTV that is broadcast internationally and features him as the magical ringmaster and his lovely wife, Cindy, as “Boopsie the Clown”. He is Past National President of the Society of American Magicians and currently edits the Magic Compass, an online newsletter that features stories about current events in the magic community. He and Cindy also teach magic at the Dallas Magic Academy and he produces “Magic In The Living Room” each month at a venue in Dallas, Texas. He is also responsible for Magic Monday on “All In With Bryan Weatherford”, another online television show that features business entrepreneurs. And in 2019 he was presented with an Award of Merit by the Academy of Magical Arts for helping to get congress to pass a bill recognizing magic as a legitimate art form. In other words, Dal is a busy, busy man.

In this video Dal Performs FLASH CARDS on his Nationally Syndicated show KARTOON CIRCUS.

#196 - School Shows, Libraries, and Kids...Oh My!

Julian Franklin and David Hinkin are a couple of the hardest working kid show entertainers in the Houston area and indeed throughout Texas. David is semi-retired after working for the McDonald's corporation for 37 years though he still entertains children at multiple functions around town. Julian performs hundreds of shows each year in libraries and school auditoriums.

I caught up with Julian and David after our annual Houston Magic Auction where they opened up about their careers. Julian talks about working in libraries and for school assemblies. He has several shows that he offers to schools including the Wild West Reading Show, Top Secret, Color Your World - A Magical Exploration of Diversity, Go Wild - A Humorous and Engaging Tour of The Scientific Process, Book Bash and the Arctic Express, just to name a few. Julian discusses how magic and mystery are important, but it's all about learning. And that doesn't necessarily mean an hour of magic tricks. You can learn more3 about Julian and the shows he offers at his website LibraryRat.com

David Hinkin had an illustrious career with McDonald's and shares suggestions for how others might get into this line of work. They both talk about how they go about writing scripts for shows, booking, and much more.

108: MAGIC Live! 2013 - Day 3

day 3 logo.jpg

Day three was another fun and exciting day that began with the Opening Session hosted by Justin Flom  A highlight of the show was Xavier Mortimer's incredibly innovative routines. He is currently featured in the Cirque du Soliel show here in Vegas, "Michael Jackson One".. But it was Wayne Dobson being interviewed by Jeff McBride which received a standing ovation.

00:00:07 – Tom Vorjahan, Daniel Herron and Eddie Wade give a recap of the Documentary Live 1 show from last night that featured the Long Beach Mystics hosted by Stan Allen and Mike Caveney. It featured David Deeble, Victor and Diamond, Michael Weber, Dana Daniels, Mark Kalin and Jinger, Armando Lucera, Kevin James, and James Hamilton (as Alexander Hamilton).

00:08:33 – I give a short review of the General Session that was hosted by Justin Flom and featured Master Payne, Bill Abbott, Xavier Mortimer, and Wayne Dobson being interviewed by Jeff McBride.

00:13:00 – I chatted with random people dining at the In ‘N Out and how much they enjoy this place. It is one of my regular, mandatory places to dine while in Las Vegas.

00:15:02 – Simon Coronel talks about creativity and how he developed his routine.

00:26:00 – Photo time with Criss Angel

00:26:50 – David Hira talks about this convention and conventions in general and their appeal to different age groups.

00:34:45 – Scott Hunstler was one of the winners on the Sunday night Welcome Party. He talks about what he won. Mark Weidhaas, S.A.M. Past President, and Errol Lipschitz, from Vancouver, talks about their experience of this convention.

00:39:56 – We viewed the documentary about Ricky Jay’s life, Deceptive Practices. Here I get to talk with a few people who know Ricky and have a perspective and opinion on the movie. It isn’t anything like Siskell & Ebert, but I think you will enjoy this discussion by Peter Samelson, Tim Felix and Jon Stetson.
